High Commissioner appealed to Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights in defense of Alexander Vinnik

On June 23, during the videoconference meeting, High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova appealed to Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatovic in defense of Alexander Vinnik’s rights, the Russian citizen being held in a French prison.

"I’m still greatly concerned with the fate of Vinnik, transferred to France. His mother was at the personal reception, she was absolutely heartbroken, because Vinnik was given some drugs, making him weak and sluggish. As before, we would ask for medical assistance for him", Tatiana Moskalkova said.

The High Commissioner also noted that the wife of Alexander Vinnik has cancer, he has two juvenile children and a sick elderly mother.

"Is it really impossible to transfer him to Russia so he could be detained here? We also have a criminal case against him, but illegal cryptocurrency is still not murder, not terrorism or extremism. At least I would like some mercy to this man. I have already addressed you and I ask you, please, maybe you will have an opportunity to talk to the French Ombudsman, the French authorities, in order to treat Alexander’s health condition, firstly, and then consider the possibility of returning him to his homeland", Tatiana Moskalkova said.

The Russian Commissioner also appealed in defense of the rights of Konstantin Yaroshenko, Viktor Bout and Oleg Nikitin.

According to Tatiana Moskalkova, it is important "that people even those, who are guilty of committing a crime, could serve their sentences in their country, so that they have the opportunity to meet with relatives and friends".

"This is the only way to improve, if the goal of punishment is a correction, not penalty", Tatiana Moskalkova noted.
